Credit Suisse/Tremont Commentary Offers Insight Into September Hedge Fund Performance

New York, October 20, 2009 Hedge funds took advantage of market trends to post the second best monthly performance for the year. The Credit Suisse/Tremont Hedge Fund Index (“Broad Index”) finished up 3.04% for the month, bringing year to date performance to 14.97% through 9/30/09.

 

A new monthly commentary offers insight into September hedge fund performance. Some key findings from the report include:

 

n         Every strategy in the Index had a positive month except for Dedicated Short Bias

 

n         The best performing strategy was Emerging Markets with 4.94% for the month, buoyed by the performance of several commodities

 

n         There is a divergence between inflationary and deflationary views among hedge fund managers, each of which have been drivers of positions in assets such as gold, commodities and long-term Treasuries

 

n         Credit-oriented strategies such as Fixed-Income Arbitrage, Event Driven and Convertible Arbitrage continued to show positive performance, with many managers able to successfully find arbitrage opportunities in areas such as mortgage-related instruments, government and corporate bonds

 

n         Managed Futures showed improved performance after struggling earlier in the year, as trend following models gained traction
